Asian American Federation

WordPress Front-end Development, Back-end Development
Asian American Federation

As the lead developer for the Asian American Federation’s datacenter microsite, I embarked on an ambitious project to create a custom WordPress theme and plugin to effectively display the organization’s data. This microsite was designed to serve a crucial role in disseminating information about Asian American demographics in the Tri-State area. My primary goal was to develop a platform that was not only visually appealing but also highly functional, ensuring that the data, especially complex Tableau charts, was accessible and easy to interpret.

The project required me to leverage my full range of skills in front-end development. I built the WordPress theme from scratch, ensuring it was responsive and optimized for various devices and screen sizes. This was crucial to cater to a diverse audience, including policy makers, researchers, and the general public. Integrating Tableau charts into the WordPress environment was a significant challenge. I developed custom plugins and used advanced coding techniques to embed these interactive charts seamlessly. This integration was pivotal in providing real-time, interactive data visualizations, making the complex demographic data comprehensible and engaging for all users. My work on this project not only enhanced the accessibility of valuable data but also set a new standard for how such information could be presented effectively in a digital format.

BROWNSTREETMRKT

Designing the logo for BROWNSTREETMRKT, a high-end clothing brand for Historically Black Colleges and Universities, presented an exciting and meaningful challenge. The project’s goal was to blend the rich heritage of these institutions with a contemporary brand aesthetic.

I focused on creating a logo that resonated with both history and modernity. Bold typography was chosen to showcase the brand’s forward-thinking and contemporary edge. To pay homage to the legacy of HBCUs, I integrated a line drawing of a historic building, a powerful emblem of the universities’ enduring spirit and history. This combination of classic imagery and modern design successfully bridged the gap between traditional values and a contemporary look, aligning seamlessly with BROWNSTREETMRKT’s ethos.

The final logo stood as a celebration of HBCU identity, resonating with our target audience and enhancing the brand’s visual identity. It was not just a symbol for the brand, but also a reflection of the rich heritage and values that BROWNSTREETMRKT and its clientele cherish. This project was a profound experience in weaving the visual story of HBCU heritage into the fabric of the fashion industry.

Rhode Island Community Food Bank

I played a pivotal role leading a collaborative team at Allegiance Group that partnered closely with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank to redesign their website. Our primary objective was to craft a website that not only provided essential information but also facilitated seamless donations and enabled visitors to locate nearby food banks with ease.

My role encompassed providing crucial technical insights and contributing to the strategic planning, user experience (UX), and design phases. Armed with initial wireframes and a desktop Figma design, I constructed a custom WordPress front-end and back-end. This included developing a unique theme and a specialized plugin, which introduced custom Gutenberg blocks to facilitate versatile page layouts.

National Flood Insurance Program (Hurricane Season)

Drupal Front-end Development
National Flood Insurance Program (Hurricane Season)

For FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), I worked alongside the senior UX designer to create the direction for the user experience for hurricane season, focusing on creating a series of regional landing pages for a national paid media campaign. My role was to contribute to the initial UX design and execute the final design in Drupal using a custom content type and display.

Each page featured artwork from artists native to the region, adding a local touch to the campaign. I managed the process of sizing and cropping these artworks, ensuring they seamlessly integrated into the web design. The next step was developing interactive landing pages for each region using Drupal, enhanced with ScrollMagic for dynamic effects.

The highlight of this design was the storytelling element – as users scrolled, landscape elements like trees and buildings would fix into place, and background animations of birds, trains, and changing weather patterns would come to life. The most dramatic transformation was the landscape evolving from a sunny day to a hurricane scene, complete with rain and lightning effects.

This project was more than just informative; it was an engaging, immersive experience. The interactive pages made learning about hurricane season and accessing NFIP resources not only easy but also visually captivating and fun. The successful combination of storytelling, design, and functionality made this project a standout in digital communication for public awareness.

National Flood Insurance Program (White House Initiative)

In a project mandated by President Joe Biden’s White House and affectionately dubbed ‘The White House Project,’ I served as a Senior UX Designer to develop a data visualization tool for FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP). The tool’s core purpose was to visualize historic flood data and trends effectively.

My responsibilities began with creating a comprehensive wireframe and visual design in Adobe XD. This served as the foundation for the subsequent development stages. I then established a sandbox Drupal site, which acted as a prototype for a custom plugin developed to display map data.

Collaborating with two other agencies, I helped guide the development process, using the sandbox model as a reference. My role involved coordinating across three teams as an active scrum team member on an agile team. I was instrumental in developing user stories and acceptance criteria, ensuring that the project’s development aligned with our goals.

A significant challenge was connecting the custom map display to over 60,000 records of claim data, requiring meticulous indexing and calculation of figures for each selected region. This demanded not only technical expertise but also a deep understanding of how users would interact with and interpret the data.

The final product was a robust and user-friendly data visualization tool that provided clear insights into historical flood trends and claims. My contribution as a UX designer and active team collaborator was pivotal in bridging the gap between complex data and accessible information, fulfilling the project’s mandate effectively.

In this project, I took on a comprehensive role, handling the bulk of the front-end and back-end development. The redesign process began with detailed Figma mockups and wireframes, which I used as a blueprint to develop the site’s new structure and features. Key to this redesign was the development of versatile content types, ranging from grant opportunities to festival details, all filterable and presented in various interactive formats. This approach ensured that the site not only provided valuable information but also an immersive and intuitive user experience.

A distinctive aspect of this redesign was the integration of unique ‘bunny eggs’ – creative features that enhanced user interaction. The website design and development for Shanklin Hall was a journey from an ambitious fundraising vision to its eventual reality. My task was to create a digital embodiment of the club that would seamlessly transition from a concept to an operational, physical space, while consistently reflecting its culture and brand.

From the outset, the website had to capture the essence and aspirations of Shanklin Hall as it was being conceptualized and funded. I designed interactive layouts featuring background videos and scroll-based animations, bringing the envisioned experience of the club to life online. Elements such as dynamic layout grids, changing background images and colors, and animated page components were used to create a sense of movement and excitement, mirroring the club’s progressive nature.

Army Ten-Miler

Redesigning the user experience for the Army Ten-Miler (ATM), a prominent distance race in Washington D.C., was a project aimed at enhancing engagement and usability for both potential and repeat runners. I collaborated with a designer from Sage Communications, and together we crafted the initial versions based on a newly created site map and basic wireframes.

These two interface designs were then presented to a focus group for feedback, gathering insights on runner preferences and engagement desires. The final design was a hybrid of the two mockups, effectively combining the most successful elements of each.

Our goal was to imbue the design with a sense of movement, using sharp lines, striking imagery, and high contrast to appeal to an active community. The aesthetic was tailored to resonate with runners like a high-end sports brand, drawing on market research and data on preferences among military personnel and the broader running community. The result was a dynamic, on-brand website that provided a superior user experience, aligning perfectly with the spirit and objectives of the Army Ten-Miler.

Group W

Leading the UX design and strategy for Group W, a company specializing in analysis, modeling, and research, presented a unique challenge. Group W required a website that not only showcased their expertise in navigating complex problems but also mirrored the organic and adaptive nature of their problem-solving approach.

The central concept was to create an interactive journey highlighting their six key focus areas. This journey was designed to be dynamic, with the website transforming as users clicked into each area, reflecting Group W’s fluidity in handling diverse industry landscapes.

One of the intriguing features of the site was the incorporation of ‘Easter eggs’ – quotes from artists and philosophers that influenced Group W’s business ethos. These hidden gems added depth to the user experience, subtly conveying the company’s intellectual and creative underpinnings.

The design process saw multiple iterations, with each one refining the site’s ability to communicate Group W’s unique approach and services effectively. My role extended beyond UX and UI design; I led the pitch process and was responsible for developing both the front-end and back-end of the website using Drupal.

The final design achieved a balance between functionality and creative expression. It provided an engaging platform for Group W to demonstrate their capabilities and problem-solving philosophy, resonating with their target audience of decision-makers in various sectors.

University of Charleston West Virginia

In a significant overhaul for the University of Charleston, West Virginia, I was part of a development team responsible for building a comprehensive WordPress website. The site was designed to feature vital university information, including news, events, student stories, and a detailed coursecatalog.

My role involved constructing core components of the site such as the header, footer, basic page layouts, landing pages, and homepage elements. Each of these components was integral to the site’s functionality and user experience. The design included several intricate features, and I was tasked with developing both the front-end and back-end of these components, ensuring they were visually appealing and functionally robust.

A key part of my contribution was working with more senior developers on complex integrations, particularly linking the course catalog with an external database. This integration was crucial for providing accurate and up-to-date course information to prospective and current students.

The final product was a dynamic and informative website that effectively represented the University of Charleston, offering easy access to a wealth of university resources and information. My role in building both the foundational and complex elements of the site was essential to its success and functionality.
